I’ve had a Dish Network receiver for, well, for a long time. Probably for eight or nine years now; I got it pretty soon after moving into the house here in Santa Clara and have had it ever since. Initially we liked them because they carried the Comedy Channel ( which eventually became Comedy Central ) and a couple other channels which the other satellite service didn’t.

I’ve got a receiver downstairs which the Tivo uses exclusively, and a couple others up in the attic which get controlled with the UHF remote controls. The RCA output from each of these goes into a doohickey which puts each one on a ‘real’ channel ( in the 90 – 99 range ), and a coax cable runs to all of the TVs in the house. That way, I can tune any TV in the house to one of the various channels from the attic; and Loretta and I can each watch something different in different places in the house. One of the receivers is a Dish Network DVR ( which sucks compared to the Tivo ), but I have it record stuff like the Daily Show and the Colbert Report, and I can watch these from any of the TVs in the house.

Now, I typed all of that just so I could feel ok about saving a link to the damn pdf for the UHF remotes somewhere, since I seem to need to find it every 3-4 months so I can reprogram them.

We had folks over today — Jim, and Paul, and John, and Barbara. We were suppose to all go over to Pete and Carolyn’s, but they cancelled when they thought that nobody was going to come over. Near as I can tell we’ve done Thanksgiving with Pete and Carolyn, and Jim, and Loretta and I for the past 13 years, except two years ago just after Kelley was born and Pete and Carolyn couldn’t make it.

So, everyone but Pete and Carolyn ( and Neil and Kelley ) came over. Dinner was around 4pm, except we actually got it onto the table around 5, which isn’t that bad time-wise. Loretta and I made the turkey ( deep fried! ), stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, and the rolls. Jim and Paul brought an apple pie and a corn side dish; Barbara brought two salads, and John brought chips and a pie and cake. At the end we had too much food. We always seem to.

I saw my doctor on Tuesday; he says again that my leg is healing quite nicely and told me to stop using the crutches, buy a cane and use that ( although I’ll likely stop using it because I don’t need it in two or three weeks ), and start physical therapy.

Here are my xrays. As I’m sure you can see, everything is coming along great. Note in particular how the bones look, um, less broken.

So, I did all that. The cane was $24; I selected an all aluminum adjustable one because I wasn’t quite sure how “tall” of a cane I should use, and I also wanted one with a bit of padding on the grip because I’m still having a bit of numbness in my left hand caused, I think, by being on the crutches for two plus months. My other alternative was a real wood / walnut cane that would have been great to shake at and yell “Get off my lawn you horrible kids!”.

Just so he gets the mad props, here’s my doctor up here. Turns out he’s a big Survivor fan, same as Loretta and I, but we couldn’t really talk about this season much because Loretta and I are five weeks behind. They’re all spooled up on the Tivo.

Loretta’s blog was done in Moveable Type on my Mac OS X server. I set it up for her before she went to Japan, so she’d have some place to post what she was doing and some pictures for me and her family, and it worked ok, as long as I didn’t do anything to touch the server.

Except, I’m now trying to get rid of that server and move to my hosted server at DreamHost. Except, I can’t get the damn export from MoveableType to work at all. In fact, near as I can tell it’s trashed the database or something so bad I can’t even get the stupid thing to admit that it’s got a blog there for her at all. I’ve got a saved set of the html pages that are Loretta’s blog ( so we haven’t lost any content ); it’s just totally un-reachable via the MoveableType apis or scripts, so I can’t just do an export and import up on the server.

So, I’ll have to just copy and paste all 50 or so entries from her old blog into new entries in order to not loose anything.

Argh!
